Son Joo-young (26, LG Twins) finally played a brilliant life battle in his postseason debut.

Son Joo-young took the mound as relief in Game 3 of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO postseason semi-playoff (semi-PO, best out of five) at KT Wiz Park in Suwon on the 8th, and became the winning pitcher with two hits, seven strikeouts, no four outs and no runs in five ⅓ innings.

Son pitched a total of 64. Thanks to Son's strong pitching, the team won 6-5, leaving only one win until the playoffs. Son was also responsible for the Daily MVP.

Son was included in the entry for the Korean Series last year and shared the championship with LG. However, he did not participate in games. He proved his capability by taking the mound in autumn baseball for the first time in a year. Son became the fifth player among LG players (Kim Yong-soo and Kim Ki-bum in 1990, Choi Hyang-nam in 1998, and Yoon Ji-woong in 2014) to win his postseason debut match.안전놀이터

Son has played as the strongest five starting pitchers in the league this season. He pitched in 28 games this season, displaying nine wins, 10 losses and one hold and an earned run average (ERA) of 3.79. He completed the regular innings by pitching a total of 144 ⅔ innings, and posted 157 hits (11 homers) with 54 walks, 112 strikeouts and 71 runs (61 earned runs), WHIP (perinning allowed rate) of 1.46 hits, 0.279 hit rate and 11 quality starts (less than three earned runs in six innings as a starter). However, Son was not good against KT this season. He thus had no win in three games and posted an ERA of 6.19. However, the autumn baseball stage was different.

If LG had won in the first round, chances were high that Son would have been a fourth starter in the semi-playoff as well. However, after losing in the first round, LG manager Yeom Kyung-yeop took out Son's bullpen card. Son already warmed up in the first and second rounds, but did not take the mound.

However, when starter Choi Won-tae was shaken by five hits, one walk, four strikeouts and three runs (two earned) in two ⅔ innings, he took over the mound immediately. Son allowed Kim Sang-soo to hit left-handed as soon as he took the mound in the third inning, but the infielders caught Hwang Jae-gyun with a rundown to end the inning.

And from the fourth inning, Son Joo-young's fantastic pitching was on display. Son gave up a hit to Hwang Jae-gyun after one out in the sixth inning, but Kim Sang-soo and Bae Jeong-dae were hit hard. While Son was playing well, LG combined Austin's three-run homer in the fifth inning and another run in the sixth inning to secure a 6-3 victory.
Son took the mound in the eighth inning as well. He grounded out Kang to the second, Jang Sung-woo to the third, and pinch hitter Oh Yoon-seok to swing and miss, respectively. In the end, Son pitched through the eighth inning. LG posted Yoo Young-chan in the ninth inning, but allowed Bae Jeong-dae to throw a two-run shot, only to lose by one point. After putting up Hernandez after one out, he garnered a valuable victory.

In an interview with reporters after the match, Son said, "I just wanted to win. It was my first post-season performance, but I wasn't nervous because I was included in the Korean Series entry last year. Rather, I was excited and had time to focus."

In fact, his performance against KT was not that good this year, which could have led to a question mark. However, Son Joo-young said, "We only had two bad games in the first half against KT, but we also had good quality start pitching in the second half. During the wild card game, Kwak said he was strong against KT, but it was bad, and Benjamin said he was weak against Doosan, but he didn't pay much attention as he did well. I had faith in my ball."

"I think the postseason is very different for sure. I interview a lot like this. I tend to get hot when there is a crisis, but I don't think there was a crisis," Son said. "I played a lot of weekend games and experienced the Korean Series last year helped me a lot."

Son said, "I thought of my teammate as well. It was Choi Won-tae. (As soon as I went up to the third inning) It was sudden and I had a runner on the mound. I took the mound in Suwon for the first time in a while, but he was very tall. I was also hooked on fastballs, but I was disappointed that I could not block (Choi's score). I was losing by one point, but I thought I would have a chance to win if I extended the lead to the sixth and seventh innings."

Now, Son plans to return to the starting lineup when LG advances to the playoffs. While delivering Son's performances throughout this season, Yeom praised him as "a player who will succeed Ryu Hyun-jin, Kim Kwang-hyun and Yang Hyeon-jong." And Son, who had a proper accident in the third round of the semi-playoff, was able to recall the name of the left-hander legend of Korean baseball.
